The acceptance of poor behavior from professional athletes isn’t where the problem starts or stops; in fact, the issue is when we do NOT reprimand them with severe enough punishments. These slaps on the wrists only reinforce negative stereotypes, which desensitize our culture and bleed into our workplaces. You might be thinking this correlation might be farfetched, but I’ll tell you why it isn’t. Misconduct acceptance from our professional athletes has been accepted for so long, when we see it in our everyday life, we don’t raise an eyebrow. It also perpetuates the belief that success and talent are more important than ethical conduct and integrity. Take, for example, the current findings of unethical behavior for 2 out of 9 Supreme Court Justices1. So, when we value success and talent more that we do the values of our organizational culture, we breed toxic work environments. The ripple effect on our employees’ morale and engagement is inevitable. Employees will be disillusioned and question the values and ethics within their own organization, which can lead to decreased motivation, a decline in productivity, and even increased turnover as employees seek a healthier and more positive work environment.
Ja Morant, point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been suspended from 25 games in the upcoming ’23-’24 season because he was seen flashing a gun on his social media2. This 25-game suspension, equaling $7.6M, is only an UNACCEPTABLE punishment because he’s been suspended for 8 games in the ’22-’23 season for the EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR. When we keep this type of behavior is toxic and poisonous to the Grizzlies organization, but worse, when you allow it in your organization, you’re encouraging positive talent to leave. Eventually, you will need to invest significant resources in reputation management and rebuilding trust in the wake of declining brand and employee loyalty.
The behavior of professional athletes serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting an ethical culture within organizations. It highlights the need for strong values, codes of conduct, and clear accountability measures. You must proactively address and condemn poor behavior while fostering a culture that promotes integrity, respect, and responsible behavior.
The impact of professional athletes' poor behavior on the workplace environment cannot be underestimated. It affects not only the individuals directly involved but also employees within organizations and society as a whole. It is crucial for you to prioritize ethical conduct, cultivate a positive work environment, and hold your employees accountable for their actions.
Moreover, as CEOs, we must remember that we have the power to shape our workplace cultures by demonstrating integrity, respect, and responsible behavior in our own roles. By collectively promoting a culture of fairness, respect, and ethical conduct, we can create workplaces that uphold the values we cherish and inspire positive change in our society.
Let us learn from the missteps of professional athletes and strive to build workplaces that reflect the best of humanity – where talent, integrity, and positive behavior go hand in hand, fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.
